Hi Andy, Ric

<<This reminds me again of the so called ritual pits that were identified by
Iron Age round-houses by archaeologists. When the built some and used them
at Butser they found they were where the chickens had dust baths. >>

Here is a write up concerning MPP's dig at Hallan

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/archaeology/excavations_techniques/mummies_cladhhallan_01.shtml

Now, if you were to dig up a 1000 BC house and find at 1600 BC articulated
skeleton under its floor - it seems to me that there would be at least two
possible explanations open to you.

A) you have found a body mummified in 1600 BC and preserved for 600 years
above ground before being ritually buried.

B) the house was accidentally built on an old graveyard.

B seems to me rather more likely than A to me, to say the very least. And
the 'proof' (!) offered that things were otherwise seems to me...... rather
slender.

Anyone disagree?

I have other, clearer, cases where MPP has proposed ritual activities contra
many of the indications - but they are less web accessible. Maybe I will
post them in due course.

Don't get me wrong on this Ric. I heartily agree that open ended speculation
is a valuable tool, and a spur, to the making of important new discoveries.

But at the same time, surely our expectation of adequate standards of
objectivity from professors is one of the foundation stones of the open
society that we have come to value and enjoy?

best
