This reminds me again of the so called ritual pits that were identified 
by Iron Age round-houses by archaeologists. When the built some and used 
them at Butser they found they were where the chickens had dust baths. 
Who know what these hollows might really be? They need not be the result 
of people kneeling in the same place - I bet there's some more 
interesting explanation.
