Yes, pretty grim viewing wasn't it. The plan is to fill everything but as it's not completely known where all the voids are that might not be as easy as it sounds.

Some of the metal supports have been taken out but some are deemed too dangerous to move. It's been suggested elsewhere that chalk blocks could/should have been used instead of plastic bags but that option was not chosen. So sadly, as you say, "...this amazing monument will be one more place forever polluted by the wastes of the 20th and 21st centuries."
