"People first lived in Britain about 700,000 years ago."

I think the term 'people' and 700K years ago is used in a general  
sense. I don't think that we can assume that 'hominids' weren't  
'people'.

...although that's up for debate, depending on your definition of the  
term 'people' (e.g. = homo sapiens sapiens, = human, = able to  
communicate and make tools + lives in a community).

It's an interesting one :-)
