Hi,

Terry Meaden has just posted a truly remarkable
photograph to this site -

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Avebury_uk_/

of the likeness of a cervid's head (deer) at the
entrance to West Kennet Long Barrow.

i do not really understand the debate concerning
carved megaliths at the Avebury Complex. Stonehenge
sarsens have engravings on them; Newgrange is
festooned with stoneage art work; not to mention
countless 'cup and ring' stones, up and down the
British Isles - so why not Avebury as well?
Unarguably, several Avebury megaliths have been used
as 'polissoirs' in prehistory, so the Avebury People
would have been aware of how to go about - and
perfectly capable of - altering natural sarsen by
artificial means.

personally, i do believe there was a deer cult at
Avebury, on account of the sheer quantity of antler
found at the site, and the way in which this substance
was carefully positioned around the complex,
apparently including Silbury, and certainly West
Kennet Long Barrow as well.

Thanks,

Ric
