[Stones] So, is this what some think of our heritage?

Absolutely. We all feel that I'm sure.
But perhaps they did too, just the same.
Whatever functional and ritual significance the stones had back then  to the 
builders is probably lost to us forever, but they also had an eye to what  
looked right I think and in appreciating them aesthetically we are having a  
shared experience with our forbears. Maybe. In that respect the people from then  
are speaking to us now, through the stones. That's pure art, isn't  it?
