[Stones] So, is this what some think of our heritage?

i guess it's whatever takes the fancy - but my
experience of 'hengeworld' - to paparphrase Mike Pitts
- has certainly not been whimsical: case in point,
Mike Pitts trying to get permission to raise just
*one* fallen stone at Avebury: he has been turned down
consistently for about 3 years now (or is it 5?).
There is someone, somewhere who seriously does not
want our heritage restored to us

add to that the dozen Avebury standing stones now
proven to be buried, in situ, in the north-east
quadrant of the henge, and the complete absence of
official interest in restoring these stones to us, and
i find henges anything but amusing :(

it is unlikely that anyone holds, or indeed held, the
key to the definitive reasoning behind the creation of
stone circles, especially if their builders saw the
world around them in any degree of complexity, the
monuments are likely to reflect this?

what i always welcome is a willingness to look at our
megalithic heritage objectively, cross-culturally and
with reference to known motifs in anthropology, and in
this way attempt to make sense of what we do not
understand - laughing at what we fear / the unknown,
is a recognised human response, but does it help us in
our understanding of the past?

sorry - i'm in mode deep, this evening :-|
