I agree wholeheartedly with all you say.
This essay, nicely titled "Reclaiming Prehistory" by a previous  colleage of 
mine in Heritage Action puts the case very powerfully IMO

In countries stuffed full of physical and linguistic and  cultural remains 
from prehistory we teach our children that it all started  when the Romans came. 
What a huge error. But who is there to listen?
