Just to muddy the waters even more - remembered the figure on the 12th century font in the church of St James in Avebury (this link might work http://megalithicpoems.blogspot.com/2006/12/serpent-subduing-figure-on-12th.html ) and can't help wondering if this pose, with its Phoenician/Roman/Christian and possible 'Celtic' similarities, doesn't hark back to some lost prototype god/giant figure/myth - who knows.
