I agree that the fact they may/may not have been misidentified as an altar  
is no reason on its own to preclude their return. Inigo Jones thought they were 
 a Roman altar not a bronze age one so its neither here nor there. 
 
I don't think there's an aesthetic problem with the look of the stone (I've  
read they might be sarsen not limestone and Burl hinted they might be 
bluestone  so the issue is yet to be finally resolved) but there would be a problem if 
the  shape of them has been entirely transformed from what it was originally.
 
For me, the main issue would be - could they be confidently put back in the  
position they were, NOT in antiquity but five minutes before they were  
removed? If not, maybe they should just be laid on the ground 100 yards  from the 
monument? Better that than in the new visitors  centre!
