[Stones] Berwick St James

Hi Ric, Naming of stones is accidental, through folklore, historic interpretation and a christian viewpoint. "Altar" is justified because it is in the "recumbent" sacrificial position, Hardy's Tess slept on the Stonehenge altar stone. Coves often have a recumbent stone perhaps that is where the idea started from but there again you could call the altar stone, stone 58, but it hardly kickstarts the imagination ;)

the so-called 'altar stone' currently at Stonehenge is probably a fallen (central) monolith, which would basically mirror the arrangement at Avebury's South Inner Circle, which was centred by a tall 'Obelisk' of some 21 feet / 7 metres; incidentally, this colossus was 'ground to dust' in the eighteenth century - not one atom of its huge bulk remains anywhere to be seen, today ...

the use of the word 'altar' is a cultural anachronism here, as far as i am aware - i know of no altars per se from the Neolithic or Bronze Age?

in this context - and i stand to be corrected - i would strongly disapprove of any moves to transport the said stone to Stonehenge
