Can't resist this one from John Evelyn's Diary - July 22nd. 1654. He begins by writing in the same vein as Samuel Pepys, showing due respect for the "stupendous monument" and counting the stones - then a total of 95. He continues - "The stone is so exceeding hard, that all my strength with a hammer could not break a fragment"  Black mark, Mr. Evelyn.

For those interested, the Folio Society has brought out a new edition of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, illustrated with woodcuts by Peter Reddick. Hoping one of the woodcuts will show Stonehenge - it's on order so will let the List know.
