"Apollo is inextricably linked with the direction North ... Sun God ... "
does this make sense? north is the one cardinal direction - in which sky - the sun never appears?
and is the author so sure Apollo (Greek Apollon) is a sun deity at all? Oxford Companion to Classical Literature merely gives "the god also of light" at a time when the Greek sun god was well attested as Helios; Apollon is a late-comer to the Greek pantheon, displacing the Delphic Python who guarded this "shrine of Mother Earth" [ibid]
snow? do we know snow fell in Neolithic Britain? is this a fact? given the fluctuating climate, i wonder? yes, winter is the time of death in nature - in the Northern hemisphere - but it is also the time of rebirth, the rebirth of the sun, a fact also not lost on the early Church, who placed Christ's Mass approximately three days after the Winter Solstice, when the short days begin to imperceptively lengthen again. a realisation presumably inspired by the third century CE Roman 'Feast of Sol Invicta', "Birthday of the Unconquered Sun," December 25th.
btw, in Welsh, Alba = Scotland
