Regarding stones and winter weather, I've always had a sneaking suspicion that the sarsens were moved to Stonehenge from Marlborough downs in the depths of winter, sliding them on icy tracks prepared from beaten-down snow.....
Much more likely than the bluestones being transported by glaciers which never reached Wiltshire.
