I suppose if you were to subtract all the present road accretions, you might go down quite a way, and also the romans had a choice between taking their road along the swampy bit where the river is or cutting through Waden hill. The thing that puzzles me though why have a barrow below the hill in the first place; though of course it could be its relationship to the Kennet anyway.....

When you stand on the flat top of Silbaby and look back towards the bank its clear that there is an embankment impinging upon maybe one sixth of it only, and not at all upon its upper portions. Judging by the current standards of the Irish roads authority they were reasonably respectful towards it.
