Hello John,

what treasure do English Heritage seek? as far as i
can see, they seek enhanced PR, increased salaries,
bonuses and a mention in the Queen's honours list?

previous diggers have probably been looking for Zil's
or King Zel's suit of golden armour, an insubstantial
piece of later local folklore which - nevertheless -
points to something of great value concerning Silbury
Hill. Problem: the 'value' which we accord things in
the world is unlikely to closely parallel values of
over 4,000 years ago - and in a culture which would be
pretty alien to us, and is anyway for the most part,
completely unknown?

so it's time to turn to simile and metaphor - when
common language fails us? - the value inherent in
Silbury is the value of the consecrated wafer, to
onlookers an insubstantial foodstuff - to believers,
the sacrificial body of a god?

i believe that Silbury Hill symbolically represents
the prime focus for the ritual landscape complex at
Avebury.
