Hi Tim,
Monument Valley I have been to several times - but not through, as it
is not possible for a coach (even with me driving) - possibly your
group will have arranged one of the guided or self-drive tours into
the monument itself...
Even the drive up to it is good - you will instantly recognise from
innumerable western films and car adverts - and the strip just prior
to the visitor centre is lined with stalls full of Dineh (Navajo)
jewellery and crafts, making for enjoyable gift buying (and a spot of
haggling)
One of the highlights of Canyon de Chelly is Spider Rock - a slim
pinnacle of sandstone which can be viewed from a point on the canyon
wall roughly level with its top - it's the focal point of their
creation myth...
All over Navajo country you will see their 'hogans' by their houses
(polygonal wooden huts with sloped roofs, resembling yurts in shape)
- these are where they perform their devotions - the wood is often
unhewn, and the bits are always oriented in the direction in which
they grew (unlike seahenge')
