[Stones] Visiting US Prehistoric Sites

mesa verde is awesome (as are all tim's stated destinations, each in  
their own way) - but very touristy, in season - i believe the one i'm  
thinking of is a state park, off the beaten track (early 1990s) and  
on a comprehensibly human scale

a tulum, rather than a chichen itza, to mex metaphors


watch out for the chipmonks at mesa verde, by the way (stripey ground  
squirrels) - they are pickpockets (if they think you've a crumb or a  
crust)
