Hello all
Those of you who like to photograph standing stones in the best lighting might want to pick up a copy of the current (October !) issue of Outdoor Photography magazine - it has a device as a cover give-away to predict the direction of the sun throughout the year.
I designed this protractor-like device back in 1992. I called it a Photographers' Sundial, and it was a cover give-away that year on PhotoPlus, a magazine long defunct. (See http://home.clara.net/gponting/index-page7.html - lower section of page) I suppose it was a sort of spin-off from the astronomical knowledge I acquired while living at Callanish.
Outdoor Photography magazine prefers to call the 'new release' a Sunrise and Sunset Compass, even though it is useful through all the hours of daylight. It works best in the south of England, but the two pages of 'instructions' in the current magazine include a map with adjustments needed in other parts of Britain. However, this article is much briefer than the original Photoplus article and I have photocopies of that if anyone would like copies.
I hope that some of you will find this infomration useful - and that no-one will consider this message a 'blatant plug'. I don't, of course, get any income related to the magazine sales; however, I am getting a nice little fee for use of my copyright, almost enough to pay for the digital SLR kit which I bought a few months ago. Can't be bad, getting paid again for work that I did 14 years ago !!
Gerald
