The fact the village was re-named Devil's End confirms the fact  the script 
was ripped off from an early Quatermass, where the nasties were  dug up in 
"Hob's Lane". Only people of a certain age recall that!
 
I believe Professor Horner was based on Prof Atkinson (at Silbury). A bit  of 
the script sort of proves it -
 
BBC Man: "Would you like to explain that reference, Professor?"
Professor: "No."
