well, all i can say is, i will be 100 when the Parthenon is finally, fully restored - i would like to see this - book me a zimmer frame to Athens!

Yes indeed - I was thinking more of Avebury in my post than Newgrange. I guess there are probably plenty of other examples of over-imaginative restoration of sites? When I visited Knossos on Crete, the reconstructions were very impressive but the consensus nowadays seems to be that they aren't very accurate.

difficult to find socket holes and match them up with fallen stones , 
Tomnaverie is a good example but Newgrange is quite different.
