yes, and i also said that children swarm over the monument (now as heretofore?) picking it clean, and when they're not about, out come EH with the bin liners - the rest is creative imagination ...

I disagree – the coins jammed in to crevices contribute to the crevices becoming bigger and bigger (this also aids the freeze/thaw process – when water freezes its volume increases by 9% which forces the surrounding material apart) and eventually the stone cleaves.  Coins left on top become fair game for the next finder!
