I'm not sure if John Germain's post is merely to attract negative attention or whether he is trying to justify a rather warped perception of what ancient monuments are, and how they should be treated.
Jerry in his comment that it was, "...very unlikely that they would have been allowed to interfere with a sacred site in a disrespectful manner." highlights the respect these sites should still be given, and Paul in his comment that, "...coins jammed in to crevices contribute to the crevices becoming bigger and bigger (this also aids the freeze/thaw process - when water freezes its volume increases by 9% which forces the surrounding material apart) and eventually the stone cleaves." eloquently describes the damage that seemingly innocent and trivial acts can produce.
As for John's Germain's question, "You might be getting your knickers in a collective twist, but exactly who are you to lay down the law?"
I can't speak for everyone on this List but I don't think any of us are 'getting our knickers in a twist'. Most of us here are concerned for our heritage, both natural and manmade, and object to seeing it damaged.
