Perhaps it is context as the prehistoric sites that attract offerings are
in the open and in countryside, the offerings are out of place to the
natural¹ surroundings. To a court this could lead them to be litter
deposited or left.
The ³it was left as an offering² versus ²you deposited items that caused
defacement² arguments would be an interesting one to test in court (any
volunteers? ;-)) - the result would go along way to measuring how tolerant
the English legal system is of non-Christian spiritual viewpoints.
Candles are common pace in a church so the waxy deposits and soot trails are
an understandable by product therefore acceptable.
