i would have thought the act of giving is going to be entirely relative - i don't think you can quantify something in a spiritual context, by its material value alone; a beautiful pebble or a poem can be worth much more - and have a far greater significance for someone - than an overtly materialistic offering?

Indeed. No "sacrifice" at all. Times have changed. A £20 note would be more appropriate. And that has the great advantage of being bio-degradable.
If the idea of somebody profiting by it doesn't suit, then half a one would serve the purpose admirably.
