Obviously if people have a need to express themselves in leaving offerings at a site than I think it should be part of what is happening at sites. The cheapskate pennies and 5ps are a token of our half wanting to believe in something that is "other" and in a sense belongs to the tradition of throwing a coin into a well and wishing for something good. We have become a secular society, but the tantalising thought that the gods did exist still seems to haunt us and so we appease them, or ask them for favours....
