well, i suppose it's all a matter of degree? - when i visted Bath, i stared transfixed by the subterranean offerings glittering beneath the sacred, rippling waters, deposited by the many visitors - it really did have an otherworldly 'grotto' ambience: but i'm not sure how i'd have felt if a coach-load of tourists had suddenly vaulted the railings and began furiously floundering about within the ancient springs, scooping handfulls of coin and sediment into their wet summery shorts: but maybe i'm just being an equally wet blanket, here?
apols if so

So what's the problem?
If it's sacred (or simply much respected) why should anyone besmirch it and spoil it and maybe damage it and leave intrusive, non-biodegradable offerings? People can interact with a site however they like but leaving a trace of their visit is simply not playing fair with everyone else.

now i think about it, i'm pretty sure there's a custom, or the like, at Wayland's Smithy - that if you leave a 'shilling'(?), it's supposed to be lucky, or something?
certainly lucky for some - that day!
