Hi Ric
I visited Wayland's Smithy for the first time last summer. And I was blown away.
I was tempted to remove all the coins from Rudston. And put them in the nearest charity box. But didn't. 'Cos it felt like I was interfering with other folks 'connection' to the place. Maybe I should've cleared them, I've wondered about this since I visited.
I like the idea that the 'good folk' can take the cash and enjoy the ice cream though...
:-D
Cheers
Dave

Hello,
Last year i visited Wayland's Smithy [is there an earlier name?] and noticed 100's of 5p pieces lodged or balanced within every hole and crevice. i returned a day later to do some photography, and found the greater part of an entire family assiduosly filling their pockets - they cleared the monument in minutes. i spoke to the mother and suggested to her that, was it right to let her children behave thus - that this was considered to be a sacred site by many? she said no, she didn't mind what her children were doing, and 'the spirits don't know where we live'. i left it at that. about an hour later i witnessed the family stuffing their mouths with ice cream - as if it were going out of fashion - at the White Horse car park.
i'm wondering if these were real people - they might have been good folk - this might account for much?
