So what's the problem?
If it's sacred (or simply much respected) why should anyone besmirch it and  
spoil it and maybe damage it and leave intrusive, non-biodegradable offerings? 
 People can interact with a site however they like but leaving a trace of 
their  visit is simply not playing fair with everyone else.
