A few thousand years is a long time. The question (here) is not how long but how many, and how dispersed were the Germanic communities over any given period. I don't really know the answer to that question (may be you do) but isn't it more likely that we have quite small communities of Germanic peoples on this side of the North Sea who were principally engaged in trading with the British but who didn't add to the native gene pool to any great extent?
