Apologies to the list - the earlier named paper, on Y Chromosomes, was not the paper reported on in the media, but a reference quoted within it -

Ric <megalith6 at yahoo.co.uk> corrected:- Hi,

i'm not here passing comment on Dr Thomas’ article, I feel this is for the forum and a separate issue? Essentially – and for myself - I cannot see the direct relevance of post-Roman / early medieval British history, on the subject of Stones? I stand to be corrected. I have also found that the author of the report – Dr Mark G Thomas - ‘Evidence for an apartheid-like social structure in early Anglo-Saxon England', quoted at some length by Littlestone, described this same media representation of his article to me (personal correspondence) in terms of ‘don’t really like’, ‘not a term I would use’, ‘clumsy’ and ‘ambiguous’. I therefore suggested that articles might have their sources checked, before being posted? I stand by this suggestion, as a rule of thumb.

Mark summed up by saying that he had 'no editorial control on how various branches of the media represent scientific work' - reinforcing, in my mind, the need to check controversial media articles - where practical - with their sources?

  bests
