...how was the artist to know that these joints had been employed, but for a fallen section, which would show the joint?
The outer circle of stones also employs mortise and tenon for the lintels - some of those would have been visible in the 15th century and I guess the artist just put two and two together with regard to the trilithons. I keep going back to the illustration however and am not 100% convinced that the sketch is the same age as the manuscript (there's enough room on the page for it to have been inserted at a later date and the name Stonehenge above the sketch looks to be in a different [more recent?] hand to the rest of the text).
It wouldn't be difficult to analyse the inks used in the main text, the sketch, and the name Stonehenge above it, and see if they are the same; would be good if that could be done before the manuscript goes on show at the Royal Academy next year.
