Yes ric, I agree (also with Nigel above). I suppose those of us who do feel strongly about the issue could form a group and lobby for it (though there are so many lobby groups now I'm not sure how much success we'd have). Like you I'm specifically interested in the restoration of Avebury (Circle and Avenues). The politics of the place though are horrendous (from what I hear the residents don't want any more stones stood because, "That would attract more visitors." I wouldn't mind getting some sort of pro-restoration argument down on paper and working from that but I have no illusions that such a project would be a lifetime's work - probably years even to get just one stone stood.
Mind, that's better than doing nothing.

"If the great cathedrals of our land can be restored I see no reason why the Neolithic ones cannot also be treated with the same respect".
between 1986 - 1998 English Heritage spent some £146,850 restoring the 'Five Mile Chapel' which juts out into the wrecked South Circle at Avebury, and whose original congregation included one 'Stone-breaker Robinson', a character who boasted about destroying numerous Avebury sarsen stones in the 18th century. The South Circle's smashed Obelisk - the tallest stone at Avebury - was probably a victim of this stone-breaking madness. not one EH penny was spent restoring the South Circle. no money available for restoration? that's a smile ~ but before or after banging ones head against a hard surface, i am unsure?
