thanks Nigel - and yes, i've heard all their excuses for 'hurry up and do nothing' ~ i don't think we should wear it any longer: these people are denying us our heritage, Avebury belongs to the people not the faceless quangoes which cast gloomy enchantments of lethargy and inaction over it

look at the irreparable damage which has been wreaked upon Thornborough by the wretched gravel-grubbers: where were the archaeological 'preserve until techniques are better' rules and conventions then?

in the near future our ability to restore Avebury may be severely compromised by many factors yet to reveal themselves - we will have let the chance for restoration and enhancing our knowledge of this monument, its people and time, slip through our hands forever?

i know this is a perennial hobby horse of mine - but when you think what archaeology and knowledge of the past stand to gain from carefully excavating and repositioning these stones - it is nothing short of a national scandal that this half-buried neolithic wonder in the West Country is consistently neglected by its official establishment guardians, who literally sit on it, year in, year out, for over half a century now. what justification can there be for denying knowledge? what justification can there be for denying world heritage to the world?
Well, money is one issue. Almost no archaeology gets done these days unless a developer is forced to finance it. Then there are archaeological and conservation rules and conventions - don't touch unless its necessary, stick to preservation in situ, only touch a small part so the rest is available for when techniques are better.

I'm not disagreeing with you Ric, just saying what you will be told. ;)
