Wasn't the part of Lord Summerisle actually written for him? Anyway, I have to say that seeing him lead the procession is somehow one of the most sinister images in my mind from a movie.

this film is so far out and ahead of its time - it almost defies words - i've actually found references to a Summerisle-type character from folklore traditions; the research was certainly done for this film; oh, a certain pop star apparently tried to buy up all the prints and incinerate them, i heard, due to the upset over Britt Ekland's 'bum' scene ~ a girlfriend of the time ~ even though it wasn't her butt at all - although the pyromania bit might be heresay?

Yup, the whole thing was pretty sinister. Believe it or not I only saw the movie for the first time about a year or so ago. I think I heard that it was Christopher Lee's favourite movie/role on the Michael Parkinson show on BBC Radio 2 a couple of weeks ago. The new movie is going to have to work pretty hard to beat the original :-)

i don't know when i first saw this film - probably the edited version when it was broadcast on tv - but i can never remember a version which didn't contain the 'Gently Johnny' musical sequence (cut, it seems, from the original)? ~ now restored

i rank this film together with The Prisoner, COTS, and The Owl Service for insular media genius ...

  be seeing you!
