Speaking of tortured artists, I went to the Van Gogh exhibition in Edinburgh
today, and had a thoroughly excellent time. First chance I've had to get a
really close look at his brushwork, and a golden opportunity to see the
original (London version) Wheatfield With Cypresses. I painted a copy of
that a few years ago, and I was surprised at how dark the reproductions I
used as sources were. Some other works were also far more vibrant than they
are in books.
